In this elementary teacher lesson plan on prepositions, students learn about prepositions from hearing the story Under, Over, By the Clover: What is a Preposition? by Brian P. Cleary[Millbrook Press, 2003]. Lesson activity worksheets and teacher resources are included.

These teaching activities are designed for students who read and write independently or with minimal help. Students should be able to formulate original sentences. This lesson can be taught in about 45 minutes and requires a copy of the book and the lesson activity worksheet.

The educational objectives for this elementary teacher lesson plan are:

  • Learning to recognize prepositions and use them correctly
  • Following oral and written directions
  • Developing emergent writing skills

Teaching the Literacy Portion of the Grammar Lesson

Show the book to the class and make sure all students can see the cover from their point of view. Ask the children to make predictions about the story based on the book cover. Tell the students to touch their ear each time they hear a preposition, and then praise their efforts when they respond appropriately. If time permits, test reader recall by allowing them to call out prepositions they remember from the story.
