Students facing the middle school experience can expect many changes. They leave behind one or two main teachers in elementary school, and are faced with six or seven at middle school, along with added responsibility. Students who have done some preparation in advance usually make the adjustment to their new school quicker and easier. Parents can help with the preparation in the months prior to the move.
Practical Ways to Prepare for Middle School
Once a potential middle school is identified, a simple phone call can provide a lot of tips for making the transition easier. A guidance counselor is usually available at the middle school level. This person can be helpful if contacted early. Some things the counselor may be able to help with are the school’s study skills policy. A student, who knows beforehand what supplies are needed, how to arrange his binder, and how to put a heading on his papers, will have less to worry about when the big day comes. Counselors can also advise parents if there is a middle school teacher willing to give advice on making the transition an easier one, and if there is an open house or orientation planned for incoming students. Students at middle school are usually assigned lockers with combination locks. In fact, they may be assigned two lockers, one for coats and books, and one in the locker room for P.E. Many boys and girls have not had any experience with a combination lock and lack fine motor skills. Students should get a combination lock of their own and start practicing with it early in the summer. Then when she gets to school on the first day, she won’t have to worry about being late because she cannot get the locker open.
