Owerri Girls Secondary School
With an emphasis on a college-preparatory curriculum, Philadelphia High School for Girls, often referred to locally as "Girls High," was the first municipally supported secondary school specifically for girls in the United States. The school's motto, "Vincit qui se vincit" (He conquers who conquers himself), is attributed to Publilius Syrus, a first century B.C. writer of mimes.
As one of the schools within the School District of Philadelphia, its motto and mission strive to instill self-confidence, courtesy to others and service to its students, many of whom receive scholarships for academic excellence. The school received a Silver Medal from U.S. News & World Report's "Best High Schools" in 2010.
