Many schools schedule annual field days in which students compete in athletic events such as relay races. Field days break the monotony of the school week and allow everyone, including faculty, to have a good time. Successful field days should be planned in advance with thought given to the overall impact on student relationships.

Tips for Planning and Facilitating a Successful Field Day

Field days foster student bonding and can help to identify potential student leaders through the various activities.

  1. Schedule the field day in September when temperatures are more bearable but the early chill of autumn is not yet in the air.
  2. Hold a field day on a Friday. This gives students something to look forward to during the school week and acts as a natural bridge to the weekend.
  3. Divide students into random groups by grade and not by homerooms. Students can interact with others they might not see everyday in homeroom or in class.
  4. Vary activities so that every student can make a difference and not just the sports kids.
  5. If possible, shorten the school day, giving field day an added incentive for students.
  6. Include an outdoor barbecue lunch. PTAs or local businesses can be tapped to cover the cost of food and beverages.
  7. Allow for first, second, and third place winners (by teams) for each separate grade level so that freshman are not competing against seniors.
  8. Make participation mandatory. Often, the very students that do not want to participate benefit the most from socializing with classmates they may otherwise be uncomfortable around.
  9. Give the planning and facilitating responsibility to a student organization like the National Honor Society.
  10. Brief all teachers before the event and invite advice and recommendations.
